Google Base aka Google Products

An useful article How to Rank Well in Google Products Search… has been posted today by Tom C on Seomoz blog.

Basically, the essence of the post is that if your site is selling any product and/or services,  you should submit it via Google Base (aka Google Products), which, if done properly, may increase your rankings on Google compared to just doing standard organic SEO.

There are a number of technical bits, which you should bear in mind when submitting to Google Base (such as Title, Description, additional fields, ongoing content renewal and lower prices), as following the guidelines outlined in the above post may strongly improve your rankings.

But the ultimate message is that in order to rank well on Google Products you need lots of customer reviews, and preferably reviews from sites trusted by Google. The list of such Trusted review sites is given in the article, and Tom C concludes the post with quite an interesting thought, which, who knows (!), may turn to be prophetic:

if I were building a ranking algorithm based on reviews, I would make the raw number of reviews count as a ranking factor… Because this signifies trust and brand awareness. The more people that are leaving reviews about you, the bigger your brand is. Given Google’s shift towards brands recently, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was {would become} a {an important ranking} factor {in the near  future}.

The words in curly brackets are added by me to complete the thought, as this is the connotation I caught when reading the article.

To summarise, if your websites is selling any products or services, I recommend you to read Tom C’s article as there are plenty of helpful practical tips to help you get started with promoting your products on Google Base.
